Downtown
Visalia

The larger of our two towns, with a proper walkable main street and the road east to the big trees. The Dem Basil is here.

Where We Send Guests

Where to eat
downtown

Downtown Visalia is compact enough that you can walk between all three in an evening.

  • Downtown Visalia
  • Crawdaddy’s Cajun on East Main, with live music most weekends. Closed Mondays.
  • El Tarasco Mexican and seafood on West Main, and one of the most reliably good rooms downtown.
  • Pita Kabob & Grill Mediterranean gastropub on North Court. Easy for a group that cannot agree on anything.

Worth Your Time

Around town

I

The Visalia Fox Theatre

A restored 1930s cinema that still runs films and live music. Worth checking what is on before you plan an evening.

II

Main Street

Independent shops, coffee, and restaurants along a street you can actually walk. Best in the evening once the heat drops.

III

The road to the parks

Visalia is the usual jumping-off point for Sequoia and Kings Canyon. The climb starts quickly once you leave town, so give it the day.

If You’re Staying a While

Settling in

Most people who stay with us in Visalia are here for a month or more, on a contract, relocating, or between homes. A few things that help.

Kaweah Health Medical Center is the main hospital and the reason a lot of our guests are in town. Downtown is where you will find the evenings. And if you are weighing up whether to move here properly, a mid-term stay is the cheapest way to find out.

Worth The Drive

Fresno

About 44 miles north, and where most of the Valley goes for bigger shopping, a proper night out, or a concert. It is also the closest major airport. Fresno Yosemite International, FAT, serves the whole San Joaquin Valley and is the usual way in for anyone flying to Sequoia or Kings Canyon.
